Gone too soon of course as we all know
I’ll remember Simon for our intense shared times at Sheffield University and then for his love of sport and the times we’ve spent together both playing it [back at University] and watching it – mainly at Twickenham but also around the world . I had the pleasure of sitting next to him at 2 series victories for the British Lions rugby team ( Durban S Africa 1997 and Sydney Australia 2013 – the hangover in S Africa lasted until Tuesday and the Australian trip was a 2.5 week fine experience where we lived in each other’s pockets for the trip culminating in the series victory – I remember Simon reflecting with such pleasure that he couldn’t believe he’d actually been there at 2 Lions series victory games given their rarity )
I’ll remember Simon was always good in a quiz particularly where he could bring his encyclopedic sports knowledge to the fore alongside his overall knowledge
I’ll also fondly remember his ‘internet wars’ and spearing a number of usually gun-toting Americans with his intellect, wit, reason and sarcasm which usually went way above their heads.
Although physically in the latter years we know he wasn’t in his best shape he maintained his acumen, wit and sharpness of mind to the end.
Bravo Simon. A pleasure to have known and associated with you from the early 80’s to the very end

Great loss of a great guy and friend.
Met Simon in my first year at Sheffield Uni and had 3 years of socialising and studying.. socialising definately being one of Simon’s finer academic disciplines…..
Stayed in contact in the many years after, and it was great to have him come to stay in Sydney on the last Australian Lions tour..
Will be sadly missed, but thanks for the memories Whip.

    Lots of love,

    Doc

Simply a great bloke, who I had the wonderful privilege of knowing for many years. Enjoyed 20 years of Touring with The Whipmiester on the Dr Hardings cricket Tour in Hampshire.
Also enjoyed a 3 week tour of Eastern Australia to follow the England Cricket team in 1998.
The week of the Easycruise round the Med I can remember virtually nothing about.
A great big man, with a great big character, generous, witty, gentle, considerate, ebullient, with a wonderful voice, who had time and a kind word for everyone he met.
It was a very sad day yesterday, but the number of people who attended showed how many people’s lives The Whippet enriched, including my own. Some of my happiest memories include the times I was lucky enough to sit and talk b*llocks with the big man on our various trips.
I got to know and understand a little more about him each time we talked and our friendship grew over many a gallon of Kahlua and milk.
I hope he has found his peace at last.
Thanks to Nat and Fred for organising everything yesterday and for their wonderful words about one of my best friends.

Sometime in the late 1990’s on Great Keppel Island, Queensland I walked into bar with a holiday companion and many rum (Bundy of course) and cokes later I walked out arm in arm with a life long friend.

One of the most self deprecating, modest, most charming, wittiest people I have had the pleasure to meet. The times are too numerous, too funny, too warm, too engaging …… and now sadly too painful to recall

A man who transcended all ages, all ranks, all backgrounds. He wanted to talk with you, laugh with you and occasionally drink with you.

Thank you Whippet … it was a one of life’s pleasures to have known me. You once wrote that you “never laughed as long or as loud” as you did when on cricket tour … well I never laughed as long or as loud as I did when in your company.

I am sure in time that your loss will become a ‘not insurmountable’ emptiness in many lives…… but right now it just feels that way.

Thank you Fred and Nat for organising such a fantastic farewell

A great man with a great sense of humour I enjoyed playing cricket with him and he will be badly missed.
In my minds eye I can still see him dropping low in the slips cordon to take a thick edge 😊😊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🙏🏻🏏🏏🏏
