I remember when John arrived with the old organ , in the dead of night after a journey up Osborne Road on its old squeaky castors. I believe it is still working.

Years ago when I was reasonably new to the Carey family, I was not aware that my brother in law John did not greet other members of the family with a hug.
One weekend when we were all up at The bungalow in Tarset John, Cathy and family arrived. I approached John and hugged him, he did hug me back. So when his mother witnessed this she also dived in for a hug from John. This was a standing joke for quite a while.

I fondly remember playing cricket in the old railway cutting and rolling decorated hard boiled eggs down the hill (supplied by Gran Carey) at Easter in Tarset with Uncle John. He loved the outdoors and went climbing and canoeing when he visited Northumberland. I loved trying to play all the musical instruments in the front room at his home in Birmingham when I visited as a child. He would often play the piano whenever I saw him and I really enjoyed his company.

I have some wonderful memories of battling through piano duets with John and scaling mountains with him and invariably getting lost, which made us appreciate the drink and crisps even more when we all finally made it back to a pub.

I too share Scott’s memories of John. More recently, well 21 years ago John was on hand with his media skills. Catherine and I announced our we were getting married and John said he would happily video our special day along with Douglas. He then edited and produced the video to a very high standard which, we are forever grateful. Watching it back you can hear John’s strong singing voice which is so lovely to hear x

Bill and I met John and Cathie in Newcastle after we were first married. Bill and John played first mens’ doubles pair in the University badminton team. When they went to away matches, John’s baggage consisted of his whites, racquets and a toothbrush stuck in his top pocket!
I remember too a few visits to Tarset, such a beautiful area, and an anniversary party with all the children and grandchildren on their various instruments graded in size playing music composed by the Organ Scholar at Cambridge, Robert, if I have that right, where we lived at that time.
